Features and Benefits

Adjustable pelvic strap in length The pelvic strap on Giraffe is adjustable in length to ensure a snug fit for each child. It must pass underneath the hip pads to give a 45 degree pull around your child's pelvis. This helps to keep his or her pelvis in the correct position to provide optimum support.
Key Point: The strap must always pass underneath the hip pads, and should be tightened until it is possible to put only one finger between your child and the strap.
Adjustable thoracic or chest supports The thoracic or chest supports can be adjusted for height and width, allowing a child to be supported just where and how he or she needs it. Good trunk (thoracic) support will help to reduce the likelihood of your child leaning to one side, which can hinder development of good seating skills and lead to sitting with a curved spine. The thoracic supports are used to keep your child in a symmetrical position, which is better for the spine and also for breathing. The chest strap is clipped together at the front and then adjusted by pulling on either end of the strap to ensure that adjustment is symmetrical. This helps your child to sit straighter.

  • Thoracic pads can be swapped over to support very small or tall children The thoracic supports on Giraffe are angled so they can be used either to sit low and very close to the hip pads to support a very young child, or to sit high to support a taller child. This adjustment means that every child who uses Giraffe can have very precise support for their particular needs and size. To make this adjustment the thoracic pads are removed from giraffe and replaced on the opposite side.
  • Adjustable seat depth The seat on giraffe can be made longer or shorter to support the whole of your child's thigh. This gives more stability and comfort in sitting. For very young children the seat can be pulled to its longest length and used to support the length of the entire leg in long sitting. The seat is the basis for your child's posture so it is crucial to set it to the right length for your child.
Key Point: When using Giraffe for conventional sitting, the seat length should be two fingers width shorter than your child's thigh length in order to prevent rubbing on the back of the knee.
  • Adjustable hip supports The hip supports are important in maintaining hip posture, which is crucial in sitting. Good hip position will make your child more stable as well as straighter and more symmetrical. The hip supports can be adjusted for height and width to ensure the child is supported just where he or she needs it. The hip supports should always pass over the pelvic strap.
  • Adjustable Multigrip™ headrest The headrest on Giraffe can be adjusted for height, angle and distance forwards or backwards, and the MultigripTM sections can be adjusted to give very specific support. By adjusting the height of the headrest you can support your child at the best level for his or her ability. Angle adjustment allows you to help your child to see what they are working on or to have a clear view of their surroundings. It also means you can control the amount of support you offer to your child.
The MultigripTM sections are unique to Jenx products and are like the fingers of your hands. They can be moulded and set to whatever position or contour you choose. This highly versatile headrest is capable of supporting almost any child in an ideal position, and allows you to adjust that position in moments. Good head support will help your child to truly engage in the activities on offer. MultigripTM supports can also be splayed out at the end to support your child's chin during feeding.
  • Adjustable/removable shoulder support pad The adjustable shoulder pad attaches to the carrier for the headrest and can be used to support the shoulders of tall children. For very young children the pad can be removed completely, allowing you to reduce the height of the headrest. This feature offers comfort and support to taller children whilst using Giraffe.
  • Adjustable footplate This adjustable support allows you to set the footplate on Giraffe at just the right height for your child. It is important that Giraffe is adjusted to offer the correct leg length for your child so that feet are secure on the footplate and thighs are supported fully by the seat. Giraffe does not alter for height so the adjustable footplate is the mechanism to ensure your child's feet are fully supported.
  • Adjustable sandals These attractive moulded-plastic sandals come in a range of different sizes. They have webbing straps that can be fixed as separate toe and instep straps or in an X-shape to hold the feet more firmly on to the footplate. This helps to increase weight-bearing and also to reduce tone in high-tone children. The back strap can be adjusted to ‘grab' the heel of your child and therefore keep the foot in contact with the footplate. The rear straps can be attached in three different positions, allowing for children who have AFOs or similar, or who wear gaiters or callipers.
The sandals attach using one bolt, which makes for quick and simple adjustment, and can be positioned at almost any point on the surface of the footplate. Small rubber buffers incorporated in the sandals preserve the surface of the footplate and also make a very sure grip that keeps them in place. This is crucial for a stable standing position. Toning plastic up-stands hold the rear straps at a suitable height to ‘grab' the heel of shoes or boots.
  • Adjustable knee cups Knee cups are used to support the knees in order to maintain hip position. The Giraffe knee cups can be used to hold legs apart to maintain abduction at the hips, to hold legs in a mid position and prevent excessive external rotation of the hips, and to support a child's knees if they have a windswept posture.
Key Point: Hip supports must never be used to push your child back into their seat - this could injure their hips. The cups simply help the child to maintain hip position.
  • Height and angle adjustable armrests/tray arms The tray arms are used to support the tray, allowing children to take part in tray-top activities. They also form appropriate height armrests when the tray is not being used. The height adjustment allows you quickly and simply to set the tray at the height most suitable for each child and to make alterations to suit different activities throughout the day. Holes in the surface of the tray arms let you position the tray as close to the child as you wish. The angle adjustment on the tray arms is used to offer your child an inclined or flat tray, which allows scope for different functional levels for a variety of activities. For instance, painting can be enjoyed with the tray set up like an easel.
  • Tray (removable, adjustable proximity – see armrests/tray arms) The tray offers a large surface to support many different activities. Using a tray allows a child to work comfortably even when no suitable table is available. It can support various prompts such as grab bars or activity frames, and can be adjusted for height, proximity to the child and angle, all by means of the tray arms. The contrast edging gives the child a clear working area, and food and other bits can be brushed away below the edging.
  • Backrest (angle) The angle of the backrest will dictate the angle at your child's hips, which can be reduced or increased by adjusting the backrest. Children will generally have the backrest more upright when they are working, and reclined - with their hips more open - to rest. The ability to adjust the angle is a great benefit for many children as it allows you to select an angle that suits your particular child's needs.
  • Tilt-in Space adjustment This feature makes it possible to adjust the child's orientation in space whilst retaining the position of all their limbs. Some supportive seats require you to alter each individual element, which is fiddly and time consuming. Tilt-in-Space lets you easily adjust a child's position without changing his or her posture.
  • Abduction Block. The abduction block is used to support the legs of children who tend to ‘scissor' their legs. ‘Scissoring' can be bad for hips as it brings them into an unstable position. The abduction block prevents this and helps to maintain the position of the hips.
