Bee

Bee helps your child get busy - busy sitting well, joining in, playing and creating. Young children flourish in an environment where they can choose to take part in  different activities, or where they can watch as others introduce them to a new interest.

For children who have difficulty sitting, Bee overcomes that barrier to joining in. It is a seating system designed to support young children from four months to five years as they learn to sit. Bee offers conventional sitting, reclined sitting, Tilt-in-Space sitting and, by adding the Long Leg Conversion, it allows long leg sitting too.

Bee can be specified to your child's needs so you can choose the optional components that will make sitting a favourite activity. Bee supports functional growth whilst helping children do what they want and need to do.

Bee has a large height range so your child can reach every activity on offer, whether it is sitting near the floor with brothers and sisters to watch TV or joining the family at the dinner table or breakfast bar. Bee has been designed to enliven every part of a child's waking day and to offer carers the chance to engage with their child literally at every level.

Bee: Features & Benefits

Adjustable safety and postural pelvic strap

This acts as both a safety and postural strap and MUST always be used for every child. The strap closes in the centre and is then adjusted by pulling on either end of the strap until the correct length is reached. The ends must then be locked securely in the fittings under the seat. The pulling from either end gives symmetrical information to the child's body and helps to ensure they stay in mid-line and sit symmetrically.

Key points: The pelvic strap must always be used.
The strap must be closed in the centre and then adjusted and locked off at both sides.
The strap should be tightened until it is just possible to put a finger between the strap and your child.
The strap must pass UNDERNEATH the hip supports.

Adjustable seat length

It is important that the whole of a child's thigh is supported to give a stable base for sitting. It is also important that the seat length is not too long as this would cause pressure at the back of a child's knees and encourage them to slip forward in the seat into "sacral sitting" which is very bad for their posture.

The range of adjustment on Bee is very large which also offers the possibility of using Bee for long sitting for very young children. As children grow, Bee has a long sitting platform accessory that allows taller children to continue to use Bee for long sitting. Long sitting can be very valuable in helping to maintain length of the muscles of the back of the thigh and this helps to enable children to straighten their legs fully and makes standing up straight and stepping much easier and more efficient.

Key point: It is important that the seat length is neither too short nor too long. In conventional sitting, there should be two fingers width behind the child's knees to prevent pressure.

Adjustable, flip-away thoracic supports

Thoracic supports hold the child's body at the side of the chest to help to maintain a symmetrical position and to help the child to sit up straight. The supports can be adjusted for height; each support can be adjusted individually as children may need support to be higher on one side than on the other. The supports can be adjusted for distance away from each other to allow for broader or narrower children and the supports can be flipped out of the way to help with transfers. The thoracic supports can be adjusted for angle.

Thoracic supports are available as long, wrap round supports incorporating an integral chest strap. These supports wrap around the child giving very sound support and the integral strap gives added safety to their position. Thoracic supports are also available in a short form (without an integral strap) when normally a waistcoat harness will be used to support children who need support at the front in sitting. Both the long and short thoracics are available as fixed or flip-away.

Key point: The pelvic strap must always be used even when the waistcoat harness is used. It is dangerous to use the Bee without the pelvic strap as there is a chance that your child may slip forward out of the seat.

Height adjustment Y-base (pedal height lock): hydraulic frame/ seat height adjustment and pedal locking feature.

Y-base Bee has a huge range of height adjustment which offers a wide range of benefits. Children can be fully positioned at very low level with their peers, up to a breakfast bar or similar to eat with the family or anywhere in between. At the time of its launch, Bee offered the greatest height range adjustment on the market. Height of sitting is a really important factor for a number of reasons:

  • Children need to be comfortable and in a suitable position to access activities.
  • Height adjustment means that adults can adjust the seat height to make their interaction with the child more comfortable.
  • Different heights will give the child differing perspectives on their environment.
  • Different heights will allow the child to access different working heights for a variety of activities including musical instrument playing, washing up, sand play, school work, art, time with siblings watching TV or playing on games or computers.
Height adjustment X-base: Gas spring assisted and simple height adjustment.

Simple height adjustment for seat. This has a shorter range of adjustment than is available on the Y-base. The height adjustment allows your child to access activities at different heights and to eat with the family at a dining table.

Tilt-in-Space feature

The Tilt-in-Space feature allows you to adjust the position of the child in space whilst retaining their posture exactly as it was.

It is possible to adjust the child's orientation in space whilst retaining the position of all their limbs. Some supportive seats require you to alter each individual element which can lead to fiddly-ness and an adjustment that takes too long for people to bother with it. The adjustment is made simply and quickly using a gas spring found below the seat and is so simple that it makes it likely that adjustments are made whenever needed.

Long leg seat conversion

The long leg seat Conversion offers long leg sitting whilst Bee also offers excellent hip and thoracic control. The conversion also allows you to set Bee up for a child to sit in conventional sitting with hips, knees and ankles at 90/90/90 and also to sit in long sitting with very little adjustment. The seat can be set up for conventional sitting and the conversion is simply added and taken away to change position. This removes the need to set things up each time as the settings can be maintained and the conversion is simply added or removed. The conversion features an adjustable abduction block that supports your child's legs and maintains abduction at the hips.

Headrest (height, angle, MultigripTM)

MultigripTM headrest comes on the same multi-adjustable carrier and offers very individual support for a wide range of children. Within the comfortable cover are "fingers" that can be moved and moulded to create an infinite variety of support shapes that can control ATNR, help with feeding, address the problems of unilateral inattention and many other problems faced by the children who use Bee.

Footplate-one piece (height, angle, flip-up): One piece supportive, adjustable footplate

Height adjustable so that feet are supported at just the right height for each child. The angle of the footplate is adjusted using a simple, easily accessible knob at the front of the footplate. This offers very individual positioning and allows the prescriber to offer lots of different levels of support and different resting angles for different children depending on the requirements of their tone, any contractures present and their weight-bearing ability or requirement. If your child can self transfer or if you wish to hoist and need the footplate out of the way, simply push it up towards the lower leg support and it will stay out of the way, held by a magnet integrated within the support.

Sandals (position): Adjustable, supportive sandals

The attractive, moulded plastic sandals come in different sizes to fit different sizes of child. The sandals have webbing straps that can be fixed as separate toe and instep straps or as an "X" strap to help to keep the child's foot in contact with the footplate. This helps to increase weight-bearing and also to reduce tone in high tone children.

The back strap is adjustable which allows you to adjust it to "grab" the heel of the child and therefore keep their foot in contact with the footplate. The rear straps have three different positions for you to attach them allowing for children who have AFOs or similar or who wear gaiters or callipers. The sandals attach using one bolt which makes for quick and simple adjustment and they can be positioned in almost any place on the surface of the footplate.

Small rubber buffers incorporated in the sandals preserve the surface of the footplate and also make a very sure grip which keeps the sandal in place. This is very important for a stable sitting position. Toning plastic up-stands hold the rear straps at a suitable height to "grab" the heel of shoes or boots.

Lockable castors

Castors allow Bee to be wheeled safely within an indoor environment on a smooth floor. Bee should not be used outdoors or on uneven ground.

Castors mean that no-one has to strain to push or pull Bee to the desired location. The castors all swivel freely and lock fully giving excellent manoeuvrability and safety.
