Penguin

Assisted upright standing is a way for children with moderate ability to experience standing and to improve muscle strength.

In order to be effective, standers must have the capacity to adjust in the correct way to offer children true upright standing. This means the stander needs to have adjustment in three planes to ensure that the support it gives encourages an efficient standing position.

Penguin has been designed to offer excellent support for children in upright standing, and the range of support and adjustment options available creates products that are suitable for children aged between 18 months and 4 years old.

Penguin: Features & Benefits

Height adjustable upright stander

Upright standing gives children a chance to experience standing with probably the maximum weight bearing they will achieve in assisted standing. The height adjustment on Penguin and Rex means that each child is fully supported as they grow throughout the recommended age range.

Multi-adjustable hip support

The hip support - the board that supports your child in front - can be adjusted for height and angle, and also forwards and backwards, to offer support in just the right way and at the right height for your child. This also means that children with feeding buttons can use Penguin and Rex without excessive pressure over their button. Different children have different body proportions so being able to adjust each body support independently is vital to ensure the best fit for every child.

Adjustable hip strap

The hip strap is probably the most important feature on an upright stander as it helps to dictate both the posture of your child and their stability in standing. This strap must always be used. The strap is closed in the centre with touch and close tape and then adjusted to length by pulling evenly on either end of the webbing strap to give a symmetrical pull and aid the symmetry of your child. The webbing is then locked off securely using the Swiss locks.

Key Point: The additional hip safety strap must always be used and tightened to the smallest length allowing only a finger's width between it and your child.

Multi-adjustable knee support

The knee support can be adjusted for height, angle and position, forwards or backwards. The individual knee cups can be adjusted horizontally to achieve the ideal position for your child. Different children have different body and leg proportions, so being able to adjust each support independently is vital to ensure the best fit for every child.

Key Point:Upright standing in the most efficient way calls for gravity to work directly through your head, shoulders and hips, behind the knee and in front of the ankles. This is the position in which your child will do the least work to stand. Penguin and Rex offer plenty of adjustment to allow you to stand your child as near to this ideal as possible, which enhances their standing experience.

Adjustable chest strap

The chest strap is used to keep your child in an upright posture. It can be loosened DURING RISK ASSESSED THERAPY SESSIONS ONLY to allow your child to have to work harder to maintain an upright posture. The chest strap is closed in the centre with touch and close tape, and then adjusted to length by pulling evenly on either end of the webbing strap to give a symmetrical pull and aid the symmetry of your child. The webbing is then locked off securely using the Swiss locks.

Adjustable hip and chest side supports

These supports are used to give extra side support to keep your child in midline and symmetrical. They can be adjusted for width to cater for larger or smaller children, and can be angled to give a really close fit.

Key Point: The chest supports should always be placed to leave a finger's width between them and your child's armpits to prevent pressure.

Secure & adjustable sandals

The sandals hold your child's feet securely on the footplate. They allow his or her feet to be placed in the best position for them to achieve maximum weight-bearing and maximum comfort, and to increase the efficiency of their standing posture.

Adjustable sandal straps

The sandal straps can be opened at the back to allow a child to step into the sandals, which improves his or her immediate weight-bearing and also reduces manual handling. It also prevents you having to ‘feed' your child's feet over the back straps. The back strap can be adjusted to ‘grab' the heel of your child and therefore keep the foot in contact with the footplate.

The rear straps can be attached in three different positions, allowing for children who have AFOs or similar, or who wear gaiters or callipers. The sandals attach using one bolt, which makes for quick and simple adjustment, and can be positioned at almost any point on the surface of the footplate. Small rubber buffers incorporated in the sandals preserve the surface of the footplate and also make a very sure grip that keeps them in place. This is crucial for a stable standing position. Toning plastic up-stands hold the rear straps at a suitable height to ‘grab' the heel of shoes or boots.

Soft adjustable bootees

These soft, supportive bootees are ideal for children who don't wear shoes or who have particularly sensitive feet. They come in a range of sizes and can be fixed to the footplate at almost any point to achieve the most suitable position for a child. The pliable neoprene bootees offer comfort, support and positioning. The neoprene is latex free.

Adjustable removable tray

The tray for Penguin and Rex can be adjusted for angle or removed altogether, which enables a child to work up to a table with friends or to enjoy a sand tray or water play environment. The angle adjustment allows the tray to be angled to enhance your child's function. It can be adjusted from a horizontal position up to an easel setting, and anywhere in between. The tray has a contrast edging and comes with a bowl and insert so you can use the bowl or remove it and use the tray as a flat surface.
