ORTHOLIGHT passive seating system

ORTHOLIGHT is made for small patients, who are unable to adopt or remain in a sitting position independently and whose movement capabilities are reduced to a minimum level of activity. This might be caused by functional deficits of the pelvis and vertebral column, deformations of the posture apparatus or insufficiencies in movement capabilities. The light system is an innovative advancement of the seating system ORTHOLINE. ORTHOLIGHT features, just like the forerunner, an individual manufacturing made to measure and offers additionally an even lighter construction.

General Data

Upright sitting position custom-made

ORTHOLIGHT is an aluminium seatshell consisting of a seat and back unit that is connected with hinges. ORTHOLIGHT is furnished in its standard version with multi-part, detachable upholstery; custom-made upholstery is available upon request. ORTHOLIGHT can also be equipped with a manually continuous adjustable back angle. According to the clinical picture of the patient and the individual needs, a broad range of accessories is available, such as fixation, padding and support for head, torso, pelvis, arms, legs and feet. Several interco undercarriages can be used with the seating system inside or outside. ORTHOLIGHT can quickly and easily be mounted on different undercarriages with the help of the trapezoidal adapter.

Comfortable and low-maintenance upholstery

Upholstery is of special importance to those patients who are forced to remain in a specific physiological position due to their special clinical picture and where a standard wheelchair is not efficient enough. The individual upholstery elements are each covered with breathable fabrics that can easily be taken off for washing or changed for development conditioned changes. The various combination options relating to outer shell and the available fabrics make ORTHOLINE a variably usable product.

Medical requirements

This seating aid is used for insured patients with whom the assumption of the sitting position is either difficult, disturbed in the physiological sense or impossible as a result of anatomic changes. The interaction of pelvis and spinal column shows functional deficiencies, either as a result of inborn or acquired deformation of the supporting structure (osseous or joint structures) or through inborn or acquired insufficiencies of the movement system, of the pelvis and/or of the spinal column.

  • Loss of body functions through spasticity
  • Athetosis
  • Transverse lesion of the cord with paraplegia

  • All muscle diseases, e.g. muscular dystrophy
  • Skeletal deformation and loss of extremities
  • All neurological diseases
  • All forms of mental handicap

Compensation of pronounced errors and/or instabilities of the sitting posture enable lasting, complaint-free sitting in a physiological position. In cases of severely reduced or a complete lack of stability of the trunk, or in cases of pronounced deformity of the trunk, corrected and relieved sitting is made possible.

The system consists of a self-supporting outer shell made from aluminium; it is available in five different sizes. The shell is varnished on the inside and outside with selectable colours. The outer shell comes in standard version with a fixed back angle; a continuous variable angular adjustment is optional. The upholstery, provided in standard or individually fitted version, exists of cold foam that is attached in the shell with Velcro. The individually adjustable elements allow adaptations to therapeutic successes or growth. Due to the use of breathable and eudermic fabrics, heat or clamminess are avoided. Customisation to different care situations can be achieved also with a great variety of accessories.

Medical Device Directive

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds is the central lobby of the statutory health insurance and long-term care insurance funds in Germany. It issues the medical device directive considering all relevant regulations. This directory is continuously updated. All available products are assigned to different product groups defined by field of application.

All manufacturers have the opportunity to apply their products for registration in the medical device directive. It is required that those products fulfil certain criteria as well as quality standards. The quality standard requirements are published in the product groups and service requirements are defined (§139 SGB V).

Every product group contains a classification and a definition with legal indemnification descriptions and indications that justify a care.

By integration into the medical device directive, it is guaranteed that the care takes place demand-driven, quality-ensured and continuous and follows up-to-date medical know-how (§70 SGB V).

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds has created an online version of the medical device directive according to § 139 SGB V. Interested parties can comfortably and well-directed retrieve, sort, filter and print all information.

But it is imperative: The reimbursement of medical devices by statutory health insurances is only possible when the product is listed in the medical device directive. However, the medical device directive is not legally binding. It only has an informative character and it delivers broad information on the compulsory treaty indemnity and the nature and quality of available products.

The registry into the medical device directive was applied for. The product ORTHOLIGHT is in application procedure. Reimbursement may be possible.
